Convert minutes in three steps
- Start with exact minutes. If you have hours and minutes, keep the whole hours aside and convert only the remaining minutes.
- Divide the minutes by 60. Sixty minutes make one whole hour.
- Add the whole hours. Round the final display only as required by the destination timesheet.
Manual examples
30 minutes
30 ÷ 60 = 0.50 hours. Thirty minutes is half of a 60-minute hour.
45 minutes
45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours. Forty-five minutes is three quarters of an hour.
2 hours 20 minutes
20 ÷ 60 = 0.3333…; add 2 to get 2.33 hours when displayed to two places.
Reverse the conversion
Multiply the decimal part by 60. For 7.75 hours, keep the 7 whole hours and calculate 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. The result is 7 hours 45 minutes.
Rounding without losing time
Some fractions repeat: 10 minutes is 0.1666… hours and 20 minutes is 0.3333… hours. If a system accepts two decimal places, they display as 0.17 and 0.33. For multiple entries, add the original minutes before rounding the combined result. Follow the precision and rounding policy required by the record you are completing.
Common mistakes
- Writing 30 minutes as 0.30 hours instead of 0.50.
- Reading 7.75 as 7 hours 75 minutes instead of 7 hours 45 minutes.
- Rounding every small entry before adding the week.
- Mixing an HH:MM duration with a decimal-hours field.
