Payroll minute conversion at a glance
A payroll decimal describes a fraction of an hour. Divide minutes by 60, then round only the displayed answer if your timesheet requires two decimal places. For example, 26 ÷ 60 = 0.4333…, which displays as 0.43 hours.

Decimal hours are different from HH:MM
In HH:MM, the digits after the colon are minutes. In decimal hours, the digits after the decimal point are hundredths of an hour. That is why 0:30 becomes 0.50 hours, while 0.30 hours is only 18 minutes. Likewise, 0:45 becomes 0.75 hours.
The chart rounds repeating values such as 20 minutes (0.3333…) to two places. When adding several shifts, total the exact minutes first and convert once at the end so repeated rounding does not distort the result.
