THE METHOD
Turn a timesheet decimal into a readable duration
Use the decimal duration from your timesheet or payslip, keeping its original precision. The digits after the decimal point are a fraction of an hour. This converter explains a duration; it does not determine an employer’s rounding policy, ordinary hours or pay classification.
A worked example
A timesheet total of 36.50 hours means 36 hours 30 minutes. An entry of 7.60 hours means 7 hours plus 0.60 × 60 = 36 minutes: 7 hours 36 minutes. It is not 7 hours 60 minutes or a clock time.
We calculate clock time, not elapsed time across daylight-saving changes. Pay estimates exclude taxes and deductions. Read the full methodology →
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Why does 7.60 become 7 hours 36 minutes?
One hour has 60 minutes, so multiply the fractional 0.60 by 60 to get 36. For the reverse direction, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. HH:MM notation and decimal hours use different units after the separator.
Can this recover minutes lost when a payslip rounded a decimal?
No. The calculation uses only the number entered and rounds its result to the nearest whole minute; a positive half-minute rounds up. Check the source time record if precision was discarded before conversion.
Where do I calculate actual roster hours or an AUD estimate?
Use the Australian Work Hours Calculator for a shift or the Timesheet Calculator for a week. Their optional Pay estimate uses AUD and your chosen rate. This decimal converter has no wage, tax or award-compliance calculation.
