THE METHOD
Read the decimal part as a fraction of an hour
Use this when checking a decimal duration on a timesheet or pay record. Keep all digits from the original record when entering the number. For example, 8.40 is not 8 hours 40 minutes; that duration is approximately 8.6667 hours. This converter interprets the number, rather than deciding an employer’s time-rounding policy.
A worked example
A recorded duration of 8.40 hours means 8 hours plus 0.40 × 60 = 24 minutes, so the result is 8 hours 24 minutes. A weekly total of 38.25 hours is 38 hours 15 minutes. Neither decimal is a clock time.
We calculate clock time, not elapsed time across daylight-saving changes. Pay estimates exclude taxes and deductions. Read the full methodology →
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
Will a rounded payroll decimal recover the original minutes?
Not always. Precision discarded before conversion cannot be recovered. The tool multiplies the entered value by 60 and rounds to the nearest whole minute; a positive half-minute rounds up. Compare against the original clock-in record if a minute matters.
Where do I convert start and finish times instead?
Use the Canadian Work Hours Calculator to find a shift duration, or the Canadian Timesheet Calculator for seven dated days. This page starts with an already calculated decimal duration, so it does not ask for clock-in times or breaks.
Is this the dollar amount on my paycheque?
No. Decimal hours describe time, not money. Optional CAD gross-pay estimates are available on the shift and weekly calculators. They exclude deductions and do not calculate take-home pay.
