THE METHOD

Read decimal hours on a timesheet

Use this converter when your rota or timesheet records a duration as a decimal number. Enter 7.5 for seven and a half hours, not 7.30. Keep the original precision when checking a payroll record: this display rounds to a whole minute and does not set your employer’s rounding policy.

The formulaTotal minutes = decimal hours × 60, rounded to the nearest whole minute.

A worked example

A weekly total of 37.5 decimal hours is 2,250 minutes: 37 hours 30 minutes. A shift of 7.75 hours is 465 minutes, or 7 hours 45 minutes. In contrast, 7.30 hours is 7 hours 18 minutes.

We calculate clock time, not elapsed time across daylight-saving changes. Pay estimates exclude taxes and deductions. Read the full methodology →

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Is 7.30 the same as 07:30?

No. A decimal fraction is part of an hour: 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes. The duration 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 decimal hours. A clock time such as 07:30 identifies a time of day instead.

Why might a converted value differ by a minute?

A rounded decimal may no longer represent the original exact duration. This tool multiplies the number you enter by 60 and rounds once to the nearest whole minute; a positive half-minute rounds up.

Does converting hours calculate wages?

No. This page converts durations only. Use the optional Pay estimate on the UK work-hours or timesheet calculator if you need a gross-pay estimate; it does not calculate tax or deductions.
