THE METHOD
Reconcile rostered shifts with actual weekly hours
Set the start of your seven-day period and record each shift on its start date. Day labels are day-first. Check changed start times, unpaid meal breaks and split-shift entries against the actual record before exporting. Breaks start at zero; the example schedule is not a required Australian working week or a break-entitlement rule.
A worked example
Three 7:00 AM–3:30 PM shifts with 30 unpaid minutes each give 24 hours. A Thursday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM shift less 30 minutes adds 7.50 hours; Friday 7:00 AM–12:00 PM with no unpaid break adds 5. The total is 36 hours 30 minutes, or 36.50 decimal hours.
We calculate clock time, not elapsed time across daylight-saving changes. Pay estimates exclude taxes and deductions. Read the full methodology →
GOOD TO KNOW
Common questions
How should I record a split roster?
For 7:00 AM–11:00 AM and 3:00 PM–7:00 PM, add two entries on the same date. Their total is 8 hours before any unpaid breaks within those intervals. Do not also subtract the four-hour gap: it is already outside both entries. The tool does not calculate split-shift allowances.
Is the overtime threshold an Australian award rule?
No. The optional setting splits each seven-day total at a number you choose. Actual overtime entitlements depend on the applicable award, enterprise agreement or other employment arrangements and may involve more than a weekly total. This calculator does not classify ordinary hours or apply award provisions automatically.
Can I check a night shift and keep a draft?
Yes. An overnight entry belongs entirely to its start date; check that convention at a payroll-period boundary. Save on this device and Load saved keep a separate Australian draft in this browser. There is no automatic save or account sync. Review dated entries in the daily breakdown before sending the CSV to payroll.
