THE METHOD

Reconcile a week of shifts before recording the total

Set the first date of your seven-day period and enter each shift on its start date. Day labels use YYYY-MM-DD to keep the month and day unambiguous. Each new shift starts with zero break minutes. Review the daily breakdown for missed or duplicate entries before saving or exporting; blank days contribute zero hours.

The formulaWeekly decimal hours = sum of paid minutes across the seven-day period ÷ 60.

A worked example

Four 8:30 AM–5:00 PM shifts with 30 unpaid minutes each give 32 paid hours. A Friday shift from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM with 15 unpaid minutes adds 6 hours 15 minutes. The week totals 38 hours 15 minutes, or 38.25 decimal hours.

We calculate clock time, not elapsed time across daylight-saving changes. Pay estimates exclude taxes and deductions. Read the full methodology →

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

How does an overnight shift fit in the week?

A Sunday 10:00 PM to Monday 6:00 AM shift is assigned entirely to its Sunday start date. This keeps the tool consistent, but may differ from how a particular payroll system splits hours at a period boundary. Check the dates before transferring totals.

Does the optional overtime setting cover every Canadian arrangement?

No. This tool can apply a chosen weekly threshold and multiplier to estimate gross pay in CAD. It does not model daily overtime, all averaging arrangements or entitlement rules. Confirm the settings that apply to your situation; the example threshold is not a Canadian legal standard.

Can I keep a Canadian draft separate from my US or UK draft?

Yes. Save on this device keeps one draft per calculator and region in this browser. Load saved restores it explicitly. CSV export produces your dated entries and totals; review the file before sharing it with a manager or payroll contact.
